The Garter SnakeReptiles are vertebrates, meaning they have backbones. They are cold-blooded like the amphibians, but they lay their eggs on land. When reptiles hatch from their eggs, they look like small versions of their parents.

Reptiles have scaly skin that is good at keeping in body moisture, so they can live in dry places. However, the skin is less successful at keeping in body heat. Because of this reptiles depend on their surroundings for warmth. Warm blooded creatures have to eat often to maintain their body temperature, and use up energy looking for food. Reptiles do not need to eat to keep warm and so survive in barren areas.

There are four main groups of reptiles; turtles and tortoises, snakes and lizards, crocodiles and alligators, and the tuatara.

We have observed Bull Snakes, Garter Snakes, Rattle Snakes, and the ever-elusive Western Blue-Tailed Skink in our many adventures to the Dishman Hills. To find these critters you must be patient and smart.

Never stick your hands in holes or lift up rocks where a Rattler may be. If you are bitten by a Rattle Snake do not move, send someone for help and get treatment of the anti-venom as soon as possible.
