Minerals, the building blocks of rocks, are naturally occurring inorganic, crystalline substances with characteristic chemical compositions and structures that determine their appearance. A mineral may be a single native element, such as copper or gold, or a compound of elements. Minerals are recognized by such physical properties as hardness, cleavage (breakage along well-defined planes of weakness), fracture (any type of rough and uneven breakage), luster (the way the surface reflects light), and crystal structure. Color may be an unreliable identifying feature, as minor impurities can cause significant color variations. The predominate minerals that we have found in the Dishman Hills are; quartz, biotite mica, and feldspar-the building blocks of granite.
