black capped chickadeeBirds evolved over 200 million years ago, during a time when only insects roamed the sky. They are considered by many scientists to be the only living descendants of dinosaurs. Most scientists agree that Archaeopteryx, a reptile like bird that lived for over 150 million years, was the missing link between birds and dinosaurs.

Today there are over 8,500 species of birds that populate the skies. In our investigations to the Dishman Hills we have identified 10 different species. Birds vary from very large to very small. Some fly, some swim, and some even burrow. But all birds have some things in common: all birds have a backbone, feathers, huge lungs, and a beak, all are warm blooded, and all are hatched from eggs.

Birds can be found all over Dishman Hills, but to better your chances you should bring some binoculars, a bird identification book, and patience. And remember, birds do not like noise! So, please practice good hiking and birding etiquette while looking for birds in this natural area.
