Granite Wall

A hike through the cliffs and ravines of Dishman Hills will reveal some of the oldest rocks in North America. An astute observer will notice the one billion-year-old felsic (a light colored igneous rock composed primarily of feldspar and silica) intrusive granite rocks. Many of these rocks were scoured by the great Missoula floods some 12,000-15,000 years ago during the Pleistocene Epoch. If you follow the trails behind the lodge, you will observe massive felsic intrusive rock. If you are observant you will notice that there is not any decomposed rock around these igneous rocks. We know that the rocks have been cleansed by the great, high energy, glacial floods and the decomposed rock has been washed away.
