From microscopic worms to large land predators such as the cougar-The Dishman Hills Natural Area has an amazing variety of animals. Animals are multicellular beings from the class Amalia. The ancestors of modern animals appeared as marine creatures during the Cambrian era, about 542 million years ago. But what makes an animal an animal?

  • Animals are made of many cells. Different cells carry out different functions such as sensing the environment, getting rid of wastes, and reproducing.
  • Animals cells have a nucleus and specialized structures inside the cells called organelles.
  • Animals depend on other living things in the environment for food-or energy. Some eat plants (herbivores), some eat other animals (carnivores), and some eat both (omnivores).A cougar
  • Animals digest their food. The proteins, carbohydrates, and fats in foods are broken down into simpler molecules that can move into the animals cells.
  • Many animals move from place to place. They can escape from their enemies and find food, mates and places to live.
  • All animals are capable of reproducing sexually. Some animals can also reproduce asexually.
